Nokia favours BSD for its development

BSD Setan
Nokia enters the BSD camp by ZDNet‘s Dana Blankenhorn — Amid all the hoopla about Nokia tying up with Apple and open source, developing a version of the Safari browser for its Series 60 cell phones, what has not been mentioned is its impact on the continuing BSD vs. GPL debate.Apple’s own open source work is strictly under the BSD.

Sounds like even though Nokia show its support towards Linux kernel development by announcing it’s support for the Linux kernel, somehow Nokia is now playing safe with open source, by involving itself with BSD-style licenses development.

Business strategy i presume….

PLKN will have Guns, hooray for trigger happy kids!!

Yes, that’s right, PLKN the Malaysian National Service will have Guns as part of their training. According to Vice Minister of Defense, the reason for the use of guns in PLKN is to increase the inner-strength and patriotism spirit in participants.

Guess they found out what attracted most youths this days, GUNS!! My house is already full of excitement of trigger happy boys after they learn about the news…. We can expect the numbers of willing participants to join PLKN will increase after MLKN implemented the module…

Way to go to PLKN, you are getting cool now !!

Perl IP Subnet Calculator

Hey, i came across this website after strolling around the web aimlessly. It’s IP Subnet Calculator written in perl. Great tools if you are lazy enough to calculate the subnet by your own. The web application is downloadable and in perl. And of course You can host it on your website for other people to use and benefit too.

This applications works great if you want to design your network and break it into a more manageable subnet.

Here’s the link : Perl Ipcalc

I hope that some people would develop an ip/subnet calculator for IPV6 and release it under one of the FOSS license. I’m too busy (and sometime too lazy?) to write one…

p/s : freeware would be ok, but FOSS is way-way better, because other people could port it on other platform.

Richard Stallman admits his income is from speeches

I always wonder how Richard M. Stallman continues his daily lives without a real job since 1984. He always preach that software should be free (as in freedom) in nature, people shouldn’t impose license fee on software, etc.

And I occasionally come across his articles on how he devoted his life for GNU operating system, promoting Free Software Movement, directing the Free Software Foundation and how he was doing all of that unpaid.

But today, he openly admits to TuxJournal Webzine that his income are from speeches that he delivers.

Aside from working, I like to read, eat delicious food, listen to music (I was just in Bulgaria and got a lot of nice records of Bulgarian folk dance music). I am paid for some of my speeches–not all–and that is where my income comes from.

Now, my questions are seems to be answered by RMS himself. Wonder what would I do for a living if i’m in his shoes… I’m not fluent in public speeches and always goofed-up on stage… hmm… I wonder…

Previously, Fedora Core 4 release date have been postponed for a week because of the difficulty in securing the legal permission for the software’s code-name. In this latest release, Linux users can expect friendlier and easier installations procedure offered by Fedora Core 4.

This may be the final release of Fedora Core 4 with Red Hat, which after this, the development of Fedora Core Linux will be handed over to the Fedora Core Foundation.

Playstation 3 can run Linux !

Great news for Linux Gamers geeks out there, there have been confirmation that the latest Sony Playstation 3 will be able to run Linux! The rumours itself have been confirmed by Sony Entertainment Presiden, Ken Kutaragi.

Playstation 3 Concept Pix

However, Playstation 3 owners will still have to add hard drive to their console as the PS3 won’t ships with HDD by default. To quote Kutaragi on that matter,

“We’re not going to equip [the PS3 with] a HDD by default, because no matter how much [capacity] we put in it, it won’t be enough.”

He acknowledged that, by running Linux, the Playstation can be used for other applications than gaming console, such as video editing and photo retouching.

Playstation 3 Game Console

To summarize that, Sony apparently wants to position their Playstation 3 as more than a game console, citing it as “supercomputer”.

Seems that Sony acknowledgement about the usefulness of Linux as an OS for it’s Playstation may be a good sign for the free OS platform. Let’s hope this trend continues in the future….
