Scientist: How to attribute free software contributions in journal article, proceeding and monograph

Scientists, academicians and researchers are a group of users that benefits greatly from Free and Open Source Software (FOSS / FLOSS). Most them would use free software not only to help in preparing graph and documentation, but also as the main tool in their investigation.

Although it is not explicitly required by the software license or by software authors, the role of free software should be appropriately attributed by academicians and scientists who used them in their investigations as it would not only acknowledge the contribution of free software authors (some of them are hardworking academicians or scientists themselves), but this will also done to fulfill the academic accountability on the researchers part.

Examples on how to attribute Free Software use in Academic Paper
1. Researchers/Academician may cite the software URL and the software author in the “Literature Review/Background”, “Methods”or “Acknowledgement section” in the articles.

2. The citation should include the software release number and the URL to download the software in order to help other researchers to replicate the work (publishing paper is all about guiding others to replicate the investigation)

3. If free software being used as the main tool in the investigation, it would be helpful if the academician/researcher could explain why this particular Free Software is chosen for the research, etc in their journal article or academic papers.

Sporadic update….

Hey there guys, I know I havent been writing much. I’ve even missed the August month completely!, the thing is, I currently working on a project which demands most of my creative time, and by the time I’ve some free time to spare, I’ve already gone tired.

But rest assured, I’ll begin to make time again as I’ve already on the final phase of the research project. Be sure to remind me every now and then to write stuff around here!

DIY Cooling my DSL-2640T ADSL Broadband wifi Router

This is the continuity of my previous posts My Modem Gone Up in Smoke! and Inside My Linux DLink G-604T Broadband Modem/Router. Seems my local vendor finally replaced my faulty G-640T after eight month use with a new broadband wifi/router with same capabilities albeit different model (G-2640T). The new model is smaller, has shorter antenna and generate more heat than its predecessor.

I hate going back and forth from computer shop and my house to claim warranty, I prefer to have a fully working hardware that I can truly rely on. Thus acting on advice from my blog readers (especially Azmeen and Kucau I decided to improve the air ventilation for my broadband modem.

Because I dont have an air conditioner, I have to improvise in order to keep my modem cool and ventilated, I removed the outer casings of the modem and attached an ordinary 12volt casing fan on top of it with a strong glue. I powered the fan with a general purpose low voltage AC/DC adaptor (‘walkman’ adaptor) to make sure the modem stays cool during operation.

The Result
Without fan, the modem capacitors heat up so fast (approx 30 minutes) that it could burn up my fingers. The attached casing fan dissipate heat quickly resulting the modem circuits felt as cold as water.
