Hey there guys, I know I havent been writing much. I’ve even missed the August month completely!, the thing is, I currently working on a project which demands most of my creative time, and by the time I’ve some free time to spare, I’ve already gone tired.
But rest assured, I’ll begin to make time again as I’ve already on the final phase of the research project. Be sure to remind me every now and then to write stuff around here!
It has been a while since I make myself busy with outdoor side projects. I’ve been learning the basic principles of building practical VHF antennas for the past weeks. Here’s the result of my work, 2 Meter band Slim Jim Antenna
I’ve completed a dipole and ribbon antenna for portable radio use. I might feature it on my personal blog – Please Name My..., so do check there regularly for latest updates.
This is the continuity of my previous posts My Modem Gone Up in Smoke! and Inside My Linux DLink G-604T Broadband Modem/Router. Seems my local vendor finally replaced my faulty G-640T after eight month use with a new broadband wifi/router with same capabilities albeit different model (G-2640T). The new model is smaller, has shorter antenna and generate more heat than its predecessor.
I hate going back and forth from computer shop and my house to claim warranty, I prefer to have a fully working hardware that I can truly rely on. Thus acting on advice from my blog readers (especially Azmeen and Kucau I decided to improve the air ventilation for my broadband modem.
Because I dont have an air conditioner, I have to improvise in order to keep my modem cool and ventilated, I removed the outer casings of the modem and attached an ordinary 12volt casing fan on top of it with a strong glue. I powered the fan with a general purpose low voltage AC/DC adaptor (‘walkman’ adaptor) to make sure the modem stays cool during operation.
The Result
Without fan, the modem capacitors heat up so fast (approx 30 minutes) that it could burn up my fingers. The attached casing fan dissipate heat quickly resulting the modem circuits felt as cold as water.

A friend from #fakap asks me to create a dead simple FLV to 3gp batch converter for him to port youtube clips to mobile phone.
As a result I complied, and created flvto3gp bash script for the job.
Usage
Using it is simple, just run this script inside a directory full of FLV (or any video files supported by ffmpeg) and execute it using this command :
sh flvto3gp.sh *
The script will convert all video files to 3gp file format one by one. The script requires
ffmpeg in order to run.

Great news out there! I use Gnomefiles a lot to search cool new GNOME apps to use for my day-to-day work, and some of them are really useful to me! But today, out of boredom and extra free time, I’ve created firefox plugin for gnomefiles. And It works great!
For the uninitiated, GnomeFiles is a software repository which list GTK+/GNOME application exclusively. The website lists applications (in source or binary form) created for the GNOME Desktop and also all GTK+ applications (Unix/Linux/Windows & SkyOS). The website also list application which uses Gnome/GTK+ bindings such as wxWidgets, pyGTK, GTK#, Java SWT, perl-GTK2, ruby-GTK, etc.
It integrate itself to your search engine pull down menu at the upper-right corner where Google search engine is the default, and you can start searching for gnome apps right from inside of your browser (i.e no need to type/memorise Gnomefiles url, etc).

o you own a mobile phone that uses RS-MMC, DV RS-MMC or mini-SD card?
Have you recently upgraded your phone’s memory card? What happened to the old memory card that came with the phone? Do you keep it in some drawer, give it to a friend? or just manage to lose it somehow?
Well today I would like to share with you something that I’ve done with an excess 64MB DV RS MMC card that I own.
All you need is to get portable memory card reader, I use the one produced by Edge (http://www.edge.net.my), you can get it from your local computer store or Lelong for RM12-18. The memory card supports RS MMC/DV RS MMC/SD/Mini SD card, and its surely flexible, the memory card didn’t fell off the slot even when I carried it everywhere.
Already bought one? Then insert the DV RS MMC (without adapter) to the card reader and voila! You’ve a USB drive for a cost less than RM20 (that’s USD 5 for comparison). Heh, It’s even supported on my Ubuntu Linux.
So keep this in mind the next time you’re upgrading your mobile phone memory card.
