I’m going to get a new Desktop PC

Dang seems my 6 years old PC (my Ubuntu PC) is starting to show its age, so I decided to set some budget aside to get a new computer for my workstation. I’m going to use it primarily as my development computer to develop .NET, C and java applications for mobile and embedded device. My current computer, Pentium 4 1.7GHz occasionally slows down to a crawl and plays dead on me with the amount of pressure I put on it (compiling, debugging, profilling).

I’ve a budget of around RM2.3k for a complete system without monitor. I’m looking for an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, with at least 2GB of RAM and 320GB storage. I seldom play graphic intensive game so I don’t mind much about graphic cards. What concern me most is the computer performance when I’m compiling/debugging apps.

I don’t have an exact date when I’m going to get a new PC, but seeing the amount of annoyance I’ve to face with an aging workstation, I will probably get it by the start of next year. Hopefully I could write and improves more applications once I get a new workstation.

Btw, keen readers might notice that I write less frequently nowadays, rest assured this pattern will not continue for long because currently I’m being swamped out by a lot of work that I’ve to do. I’ll be back writing at full pace after this month, and yes according to statistic — November is kinda a slow month for me.

Happy Birthday to me :p

Usually I don’t post these things on my blog. But seems APZ from ICCL took the time to create a birthday strip for me so I think it would be appropriate to share with you out here.

The work has been put together using Maya on Debian Etch.

Enjoy !

I’ve ruined my Ubuntu Feisty Fawn Installations

Wel, a stupid mistake while configuring maemo development and testing environment has left me with an unsuable Ubuntu installation, the one that I’ve been using continuously for almost two years.

Looking at the damages, it seems far more simple to just backup stuffs in /home and start with a fresh Ubuntu Feisty Fawn reinstallation, and while i’m at that, maybe I should give a shot at Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 5 release.

Fortunately, backing up files in my Linux pc is as easy as tarring all the stuff inside /home and copying it to another storage media, and looks like I’m done with the copying part now. What left for me to do is to pop in the Ubuntu Feisty Fawn CD and reboot my pc to reinstall my operating system again.

If this were to happen on Windows XP, i think i’ll be looking at hours of browsing through my CD collections looking for various software installers and hardware drivers CD. phew….

This has reminded me to keep backups of my crucial works as a mistake like this can cause you efforts and months of works. Well it could been worse than this, like losing my sanity over crashed hard disk. Fortunately I’ve a policy of always making backups of my current documents once-in-a-month, well even that might not be enough, as disaster might caught you when you’re least prepared. Btw have you done your backup today?

New Features in Mypapit GNU Linux

It’s July again! Seems everywhere people are talking about iPhone and Transformers the Movie. I would have things to say about the current events too, but I better save it for my personal blog which I’ve yet to create.

Since Mypapit GNU/Linux blog has been around for more than two years, I would like to introduce some new changes to increase the quality of the blog, which are :

  1. Popular Articles of the Month – I’ll list 3 to 5 most popular articles of the month starting June 2007
  2. Mobile Phone, PDA, GPS updates will be posted on Mobile Programming Pit
  3. Personal Updates will be posted on my personal blog – to be announced later (it will be on a .my domain)

Any suggestion ?
You may forward you suggestion or article request directly to me using my contact form

I hope you would enjoy these improvements as I enjoy introducing them, cheers
