Unsupportive Tech Support

This is a summary of a real-life story about upgrading a Microsoft product :

  • A client is having problems with Microsoft Money 2002. She is told upgrading to Money 2006 will solve the problem.
  • She buys Money 2006 Deluxe from Amazon.com, installs it, and begins the data import wizard, which repeatedly crashes the app.
  • She spends 1.5 hours on the phone with Microsoft trying to resolve the problem to no avail
  • She installs Money 2003 (an OEM version which came with her computer) and imports the data successfully.
  • She calls Microsoft Tech Support for help with 2003, and is told since it is an OEM version, no help is available without paying
  • She patiently explains that she just bought Money 2006 Deluxe on their advice and would prefer to run that, but has no choice since it won’t import her Money 2002 data successfully.
  • The support agent asks for the product key or serial number for Microsoft Money 2006.
  • There is no such number anywhere on the retail box, CD case, or CD itself, nor was one required during install.
  • No number = no help she is told
  • There is no such number she tries to explain again and again.
  • I pick up the phone and try to explain the situation, end up going postal, and get hung up on by the Indian support agent.

Conclusion :

  1. Read the EULA that comes with your software slowly and carefully, you’ll be suprised!
  2. Microsoft softly force people to upgrade without giving sufficient downward compatibility or support
  3. The OEM-edition user isn’t entitled for Microsoft support without paying first
  4. Even if you pay for the full product, doesnt mean that Microsoft Support would play nice with you

Remind me of my own experience with tech support, the lenghty one which tells me to check blinking lights, delete certain icons from my desktop and create it back. Oh sorry, there’s no winning prizes for those who can guess it right…

A milestone!

My blog reached 100th post today! When i first started this blog, i never thought that I would have come this far, because I’m just not a person who likes to jot down every details on my life or even keep a simple journal.

Well now I did it, I even cant see when will I stop blogging! Thanks to all of you that supported me… :)

Microsoft Xbox 360 isn’t so worldwide after all

The new Microsoft Xbox 360 game console is going to be region-locked for both games and DVD. This means that you can only play games or watch DVD from the same region your Xbox 360 is locked to. The region-lock imposed by Microsoft may prevent you from buying some hard-to-get games abroad and play it on your Xbox 360, because the game might not be playable on the console!

Ironically, The Xbox 360 is scheduled to be launched world-wide by the end of this year and was touted being a world-wide brand, yet it’s media and software cannot be use “worldwide”.

Finding your stuff with Google Blog Search

I’ve just noticed that now you can search blogs using google at http://blogsearch.google.com/. Having this kind of search engine means that you can search blogs for specific terms with ease.

Still in Beta, the Google Blog Search isn’t only limited to blogger.com users, but it also covers other blogs too. Utilizing the Google Search, the site is certainly useful if you want to know about particular thing that people have blogged about.

But since blogger.com is owned by Google itself, seems that the company has given extra attention to blogs based on blogger.com. Well, seems pretty logical for me…

I’m going to backup my Mozilla profiles but…

Mozilla Firefox Logo

I want to migrate all of my old emails and settings from my Windows box to my GNU/Linux box. Well, I heard of a program called MozBackup which can help you backup your thunderbird profile including settings, emails and preferences.

The problem is, The program only works in the Microsoft Windows platform and does not work in GNU/Linux or *BSD system. The FAQ page of this software explains that the author is rewriting the software in .NET to be use on GNU/Linux. But it isnt good enough because it’s isn’t a Free Software (philosophy side) and everybody knows that Mono still haven’t supported Windows Form quite well yet (technical feasibility side).

There are other alternatives, but all of them are meant to be executed on Microsoft Windows platform. Can anybody point me a Mozilla backup software (which automates the profile backup) which runs on GNU/Linux platform?

p/s: I know how to do this manually, I’m just asking out of curiosity if there exist an application out there which automates this procedure for GNU/Linux and *BSD platform.

Blogger Site Feed Bugs?

Have you ever encountered Blogger site feed bug where your feeds settings suddenly syndicated as “Short” summary instead of “Full” content of your post?

This thing had happened to me twice without a warning, it’s very annoying for me as I like to publish my site feeds in full. My objective of publishing the site feed in full because I want to relay information to my readers, but there’s seems some kind of bug that keeps me from doing that from time to time.

I had to change the feed setting to “Short” summary and “Full” again to counter the bug, but I believe this is not a correct way to do it. I hope blogger.com will fix this bug soon or at least provide explanations to users
