GnuBoy – Play Classic GameBoy Games in your Computer

I don’t know if any of you ever had one of these back in the 90s. It’s a sort of handheld game console, veteran gamers might recognise it as a GameBoy console. Too bad in those days i can’t afford the luxury to buy one of those game console :p, thus I occasionally borrowed my friends’ GameBoy and logged many hours with it.

Why I suddenly blog about GameBoy? Because one fine day, I find myself curious about the gnuboy package included in my Ubuntu universe repository. The package reads

gnuboy emulates the Color GameBoy handheld console in portable C, with interfaces for X11, Linux fbcon and svgalib, SDL, DOS, and Windows, with other ports planned in the future

So I decided to try the out the gnuboy emulator and try to relive Nintendo GameBoy feeling. The gnuboy itself is flexible and supports SDL, X11, svgalib and fbcon display. However, I chose the SDL version because I like how games are implemented in libSDL. Suprisingly, the game I’m trying to play was emulated faithfully without noticeable bugs or artifacts (besides the retro 90s look), I could say that this is one of the best game emulator that I ever tried besides DosBox which provides emulation for DOS games.

Where to get GameBoy ROM files ?

Legally, you need to actually own the game in order to have the ROM . However there is a place where you can get legal GameBoy ROM files which is here : http://www.pdroms.de, and here : jaymzroo 86 site.

Where you can get gnuboy ?

You only need to enable multiverse/universe software repository if you are using Ubuntu. Try to check your software repository under games or emulator if you are using other GNU/Linux distributions. There’s gnuboy ports exist for FreeBSD under emulators.

The meaning of ‘terror’ in colloquial Malay

If you are living in Malaysia and has a lot of Malay friends, there’s chances that you may encountered these kind of conversation/dialog

A : kau ni memang terror la.
B : Eh aku mana terror bab-bab ni, kau tanya Lim tu

C: mamat tu buat wheelie time korner maut, terror betul !

D: Kena terror jugak nak jawab soalan-soalan ni

In a webster terror means :
terror
n 1: an overwhelming feeling of fear and anxiety [syn: panic]
2: a person who inspires fear or dread; “he was the terror of
the neighborhood” [syn: scourge, threat]
3: a very troublesome child [syn: brat, little terror, holy
terror]

I guess some of you may already know what this ‘terror’ means in the context of conversation. Usually in colloqual Malay, terror means clever,skillful or an expert. I’ve heard this kind of use since before I enter primary school.

The thing is, I can’t help but wonder how this word has come to use widely in malaysian community to describe somebody who are clever, skillful or with expertise. Could it be misinterpretation from an older generation?

What would you call somebody who is an expert in (let’s say) farming ? a terrorist farmer?

Funny Google Groups Malay Translations

I’ve some trouble with my php code, so I decided to search around php mailing list for some xml-rpc implementations specific solutions. Since google groups has tons of mailing list archives, I decided to start there first. After few minutes of reading for possible solutions and ideas, I decided to try out the Google Groups syndication feed, because I was curious about it.

My curiousity paid out because I finally saw Google began using ATOM 1.0 syndication format, but shortly after that, my eyes scan down the page and I read something that makes me laugh out loud! Apparently Google has taken the translation thingy too seriously by over-translating proper nouns.

Can you guess what Google mean by “makananSetan”, “RuangBawah”, “beritaGator” and “JaringanBeritaWayar” in the screenshot below? (p/s: they are all in Malay language)

I really don’t want my feed ends up to be makananSetan…

Nobody can Google like the Klingon!

It is rather seems odd to use Google in Klingon language. But it is nice to know that the choice is there. For the uninitated, Klingon is a fictional language of a warlike alien race featured in Star Trek Universe. There’s a lot of Klingon language references in the internet, notably the Klingon Language Institute which is a dedicate website for the Klingon Language. The Institute is a nonprofit corporation and exists to facilitate the scholarly exploration of the Klingon language and culture.

I’m here for Langkawi, not Kuala Lumpur!! Get your geography right!

While I’m on holiday in Pulau Langkawi, I’ve decided to take a cable car ride in gunung Mat Cincang, since I missed it the last time I went to Pulau Langkawi. They said that you can get a fine view of Langkawi from up there.

As I entered the Oriental Village, I was suprised by what I saw. What the heck with that signboard?

I mean what the heck with Jalan Dang Wangi signboard (complete with postcode) doing in the middle of Pulau Langkawi? Am I in federal territory now? Is Malaysian govt is too ashamed to admit this tourist attraction is in Langkawi?

Who’s the wise guy that came out with this idea of putting misleading signboard anyway? For starters, this place doesn’t look like Jalan Dang Wangi in Kuala Lumpur at all! I don’t know about you, but if I’m a Langkawi resident, I’d surely be deeply insulted by now.

Before you argue with me that the signboard is cool, save it. It isn’t cool to a tourist. I know that first hand because I’m a tourist myself, it’s misleading and it shows that Langkawi does not deserve such place so that the management had to put a fake signboard to make people felt they are someplace else. What’s wrong by putting the right signboard? At least people will remember it in their *cough* *cough* photographs.

Langkawi is a nice place, shame that some people doesn’t want to label themselves as being Langkawians.

Windows in Malaysian ATM Machines?

I saw this post when i was surfing kamal’s (k4ml) blog. He wrote that he saw a Public Bank ATM running Windows OS, probably with Microsoft Windows NT/9x.
