Some Servicing Required

I’m Upgrading/Optimizing my WordPress blog software, please inform me if my blog loads slowly.

Meanwhile, I think i’m going to be busy for the next couple of days, doing some stuffs, but I promise will be back with some cool post for you guys. Thanks for reading anyway.

WordPress 2.0.5 is out

WordPress 2.0.5 is out, it is a bugfix release that fixes around 50 bugs lying around WordPress 2.0.4. Among bugs that has been fixed are :

  • Fixes the redundant “no follow” bug
  • /feed/ no longer display “404” page if there is no post
  • Post title now can have ‘%’ character
  • Fix the “RSS 2.0 invalid” bug

In addition to various bugfix WordPress 2.0.5 plugins page now are sorted according to the plugin name out from the box. For those who are reluctant to upgrade to 2.0.5 (Ronan), I guess you can still wait, because WordPress 2.1 (with some feature enhancements) is going to be launched soon.

Well, that’s for now…. and ah yes, I’ll be installing Ubuntu Edgy Eft on Compaq v2613 tonight, so expect me to be busy ;)

Cool WordPress stats plugin with Google Map support

Sorry for the sparse post last week, this is because I’ve been busy with other chores and personal things that i’ve to take care of.

But look, I’m back! And I’ve modded my blog with this cool wordpress plugin. This plugin is basically does what a normal statistic plugin should do; display your last visitors, your most read post, top referrers and their ip address, etc. What makes this statistic plugin stand off is it visualise the location of your visitor by using Google Maps api.

That’s right, you can visually see your latest visitor on the Google map and measure how your website is internationally recognisable over the globe. You can see the plugin in action by clicking “website statistic” link at my sidebar.

The plugin can be downloaded from its project website and it requires MaxMind GeoCityLite.dat file (about 25MB) uploaded to your server.

It’s one of the best wordpress plugin i have for now (the other is Related Post plugin). Thanks aizatto for introducing GeoTrack plugin to me !

Free WordPress blog hosting

I’ve compiled a list of websites that offers free wordpress blog hosting, listed in no particular order :

  1. wordpress.com
  2. http://blogsome.com
  3. http://weblogs.us (no ads)
  4. http://blogs.bizhat.com
  5. http://blogtastic.com
  6. http://www.lustjournal.com (for NSFW)
  7. http://www.tacticalblog.com
  8. http://www.blogthing.com
  9. http://ilblog.it/
  10. http://www.modblog.com
  11. http://wpblogs.com/
  12. http://webloog.com/

Note that most of these free blog hosting services offer WordPress-mu version, which uses a different template engine than the mainstream WordPress. Other features and plugins are compatible with the normal WordPress however.

p/s : Please add other WordPress hosting service to the list as I might miss out on something.

Import Blogger.com post & comments to WordPress

Moving from Blogger.com post to WordPress is rather painless for me, thanks to the import-blogger script that comes with WordPress package. However, the default script does not import the previous Blogger comments, which is rather dissapointing for some who will miss the valueable comments.

However, i found out that this script will help you to export all blogger posts and comments to WordPress with relative ease. You just need to select “Save As” to save the file import_blogger.txt to import_blogger.php and overwrite the original import-blogger.php script. What you need to do next is point your browser to http://yourwordpress.com/wp-admin/import-blogger.php, and follow the rest of the instructions there, you’ll be having your old posts and comments on your WordPress account in no time!

I’ve tried the scripts and i’m very satisfied with the results! Good luck in migrating!
