Howto Manage Successful Open Source Software Projects Books

I’d like to share with you two great books I’ve read which motivates me in managing open source software projects.

These two books has taught me all the things I need to know about starting up a successful Free and Open Source Software project, best practices and how to handle the project properly.

Most importantly the books taught me how to use essential tools that helps me in the development of collaborative open source projects development.

Among the thing explained in the books are:

  • Guide on starting Open Source Software Project
  • Source Code Control (SVN,CVS)
  • How to manage bug tracker and feature request
  • Choosing an Open Source License
  • How to setup discussion channel (mailing lists, IRC channel)
  • Funding your project
  • Managing Volunteers
  • Managing Documentations effectively
  • Sharing management and technical tasks
  • Choosing Project Committers

For those who are interested to read these two great books, you can get them from here :

Linux GTK+ 1337-generator : Text to Leetspeak converter

I found out about this application from GnomeFiles. Not particularly useful, but entertaining. The basic operation of the program is to convert plain text into leetspeak writing system.

Future releases may provide functionality to reverse leetspeak text back to plaintext for greater readability.

1337 generator requires GTK+ 2.x and can be downloaded from http://leet-generator.sourceforge.net/

Google Adwords and Adsense allows nude pics ads?

I found this Google ads from Pinoyhack blog via fakapster

google_ads_nude.png

I know some people consider nude pics and nudity as an art, but does this means that you are safe to put your google ads on the same page as those pics? Sounds like a grey area to me.

Wonder if anybody ever advertised or put google ads on website filled with nude pics that might borders to pornography?

Foundation Platform: Linux-based Mobile Applications Standard?

I recently came across on one article about LiMo Foundation which is established by Motorola, Panasonic, Samsung , NEC, NTT DoCoMo, and Vodafone to develop Linux-based, open mobile communication device software platform.

From its whitepaper, It seems that the goal of Foundation Platform is to develop a Linux-based Mobile Application framework similar to Sun MIDP/CLDP for its Java2ME platform.

The Foundation Platform also define a standard way to represent GUI on mobile phone using GTK+ library. This is to encourage application interoperability between devices and to enhance mobile application user experience.

Hopefully in the future , we can develop a portable Linux application that can be compiled and run on any Linux mobile devices with little or no changes. This would encourage the FOSS to spread across mobile devices too.

Mandrake Linux: My First Linux distro Experience

I started to use Linux around 2001, when I was advised to write a two pass assembler for SIC/XE machine using a unix-like operating system at that time back in my University.

It is not that I don’t have access to the university shell account, but the lecturer encourage us to try and install GNU/Linux operating system on our personal computer so we could learn more about the so called unix clone. The lecturer mentions that he uses Red Hat Linux 7.1 at that time, and shows a demo how the Linux works.

Intrigue, I went to local cd shop and bought Continue reading “Mandrake Linux: My First Linux distro Experience”
