It nearly hit home – flash flood in Alor Star

Here are the pictures of flash flood in Alor Star. Places like Jalan Stadium, part of Jalan Putra, Jalan Pintu Sepuluh was flooded, though not as badly as in Changlun and some part of Jitra. Lucky that the flash flood doesn’t hit my home, because I hate rearranging my furniture back and forth.

The flood has subside in Alor Star now, with traces of mud and stinking smell particularly in area near Kedah Medical Centre (KMC), I saw a pickup truck was pulled into the river by the flash flood while driving around the place, hmmm.

How to build Ubuntu DVD images

ubuntu logo

I’ve found a nice guide to build Ubuntu DVD (5.10 breezy badger) DVD images, the nice thing is, the guide includes instruction on how to build universe and multiverse DVD too! The guide started off with step-by-step instruction, guiding users from creating local mirrors straight to building DVD iso images.

The website also offers prebuilt Ubuntu Breezy DVDs (main, universe #1, universe #2), convenience for those who needs to access Ubuntu repo locally.

If you’re Planning to Open an Autosurf Website, Please Stay Away From Shared Hosting

Following the success (or downfall?) of Studiotraffic and 12DailyPro (is it?), I’ve seen an increasing trend of people setting up autosurf website to make quick bucks out of it. IMHO, these autosurf program made a flawed assumption that there will always be new members that join their program to sponsors the current members.

There’s no doubt that people are making money with it, but the question is for how long? OK, just leave that matter someplace else, lets assume that autosurf program is really a money making machine, when put on the web.

But if they are really making quick bucks, then why did they rented a shared hosting space?? Autosurf program hogs the server, and deprive others from enjoying their hosting service. In the end there always be consequences to the webhosting company, whether their users will end up migrating to another provider with greater credibility or kick out the these “quick buck entrepreneur” out from their host.

So please save yourself from the embarrassment. If your “autosurf credit” worth something, go and get a colocation or even a dedicated server for your quick buck program. Or better yet, get a real job instead of ending up like Studiotraffic, bullshitting everybody about their solid and strong autosurf program.

AcronymFinder.com sucks, use it only as your last resort

I don’t know about you guys, but I found that AcronymFinders.com service is suck beyond my level of tolerance. First of all it can’t find the most trivial acronym, and secondly its result are too damn commercial-oriented. Instead of listing the most obvious and relevant acronym, the AcronymFinder list the acronym which has the most commercial-value.

AF logo

Why? Because their result page feature links to amazon.com product finder, they are cashing in the visitor by supplying commercial oriented result! Now that’s annoying.

I suggest that people use Answers.com instead for finding acronym, not that Answers.com feature less advertisement, but because Answers.com supplies relevant acronym that is not too commercially oriented. Hopefully somebody would came up with another useful website for finding acronyms.

Killing time with SuperTux game

My mom’s cousin getting married today, and after going there, I realised that I’ve got so much time in my hands without things to do. So, I’ve decided to try this game, SuperTux.

At first glance, it seems like a nice game, and after installing the game, I felt like it really is! In fact, I spend an hour and a half playing that darn game. By the way, SuperTux is brought to you by the NewBreedSoftware and is licensed under the GNU General Public License v2. Though it may seems a bit childish, it reminds me of the good old simpler days of sidescrolling games like Super Mario Bros or DoubleDragon and such. Besides, it serve its purpose of killing some of my extra time, hehe…

Free Cron job service with cronjob.de

Good news for those who are looking to find free hosted cron job website, I just the website for you. http://cronjob.de, is a German website which offers you free cronjob services for your website.

The downside is your cron job script must be accessible via web (it supports web cron job only) and to avoid server busy, your cronjob can only be executed by 5 minute apart as opposed to 1 minute in normal cronjob. Another note, the website is in German only, so hope you can cope with the german language when using cronjob.de.

For a free service, this is a bargain because I’ve came across websites that offers hosted cron service with a fee of USD10-USD120 per year!

But as for me, I prefer to use cron from my shell to execute automated tasks. If you are hosting a website, ask your webhosting provider for a shell and makes sure there REALLY supports cron, it makes your life far more easier.
