Nobody can Google like the Klingon!

klingon, blog, google, google.com, languages

It is rather seems odd to use Google in Klingon language. But it is nice to know that the choice is there. For the uninitated, Klingon is a fictional language of a warlike alien race featured in Star Trek Universe. There’s a lot of Klingon language references in the internet, notably the Klingon Language Institute which is a dedicate website for the Klingon Language. The Institute is a nonprofit corporation and exists to facilitate the scholarly exploration of the Klingon language and culture.

There’s even a blog written entirely in Klingon, http://bologh.blogspot.com/, the first ever blog written in Klingon

LinuxFilter – digg-like website for Linux News

linux, news, social bookmarking, digg.com, digg, blogging

After the introduction of SpyMy.com, now comes LinuxFilter, a news website that uses the concept of news voting by the internet users.

The basic operation of this website is the same as digg.com in which users will decide which story will be published at the frontpage through a voting system. Though it is named “Linux”, LinuxFilter does accept other news category as well such as PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby, Lua and various other topic which mostly related to computing and FOSS.

As for the uninitiated, you can participate by registering yourself in LinuxFilter website, and submit your news for users review. You can also help by reviewing other people’ news and rate it. The reviews and voting will determined if the story will be published in the front page.

Happy submitting !

Windows users – UWIN an alternative to CYGWIN

unix, cygwin, windows, posix, computers

UWIN (Unix for Windows) is a collection of softwares created by AT&T Laboratories can be seen as an alternative to Cygwin. UWIN provides a unix-like environment for windows, complete with unix-emulation api and Korn shell.

UWIN is generally useful for developers who wants to compile certain unix applications in windows. Much like Cygwin, UWIN contains a DLL file POSIX.DLL that provides substantial unix API functionality instead of windows built-in posix layer. UWIN package also include files and unix development tools such as C compiler (but not gcc, obviously!).

The unix-environment also comes with Korn shell (AT&T ksh) and various other standard unix utilities which brings you the right unix-like environment in your Windows system.

You can download UWIN from AT&T AST/UWIN open source downloads.. UWIN is licensed under Common Public License 1.0.

p/s: this may be a great environment for those who wants to try out Unix environment without GNU stuff (even without gcc!).

HelpFireFox and Million Dollar Homepage preparation

If you are planning to open yet another MillionDollarHomepage clone, then I suggest you to consider having a stable server before launching it. Because HelpFirefox website has been knocked down due to overwhelming response in just a couple of day.

The website has been closed with a notice “The first 24 hours of this site has been a true success, with more than 13 800 pixels being sold.”.

Beside having a stable server, I think it would be wise if “Million Dollar Homepage” operators could register their domain(s) for a minimum of 3-4 years, because that would bring confidence to the prospective advertisers.

Nobody would want to advertise on unreliable websites, for a short (unspecific) duration of time.
